speedometer cable routing

speedometer cable routing
Can anyone tell me how the speedometer cable should be routed. Mine is laying on top of valve covers and runs in front of the carb. It just doesn't look right to me. It would make more sense to me to go over the bell housing. Anyone have a picture?
