Well my trucks the 74 F100 standard cab and I plan on a stereo pretty soon but i just wanna get some ideas or maybe take some of your guys routes. I am mechanically inclined and can fab/mod any little thing to make something fit and look nice. I just need ideas.
Anyways just a CD player, and Ide like to have 4-6 speakers, good size amp, and a 10" single sub.
I plan on puttin speakers in the doors, but dont know where to mount any of the others, i thought about the dash.... but I dont like the idea and it looks too tacky.
And where to put the sub? Behind the seat? I have no idea
You'll have a tuff time getting all that in there if you have the in cab gas tank you will have trouble finding a home for a 10", I have seen it done but the seat had to be raised 2" and the front/rear slide had to be locked in one position because the seat frame would drag across the top of the sub and tear holes in the surround. A good component speaker set in 6 1/2 or 6x9 has always been the best I can come up with, I put mine in the kick panels in my 68 because I don't like wiring in the door jambs my brother ruined a head unit when a wire wore through. I just don't know where you would put any more the two speakers, the only good spots I know of are the doors and the kick panels and it just seems pointless to put speakers within a foot of each other. As for subs you might be able the sneek something like this under the seat Blaupunkt THb 200A Compact powered subwoofer 70-watt amp with an 8" sub at Crutchfield.com
They didn't have neat stuff like that back when I was messing with it now I just got to best buy for free install and what all the little nerds with the import tuner hondas that work there cringe when they see my old truck and realize they don't have one of there nifty kits and plug and play harnesses for it. Well hoped this helped it has been almost ten years since I have done any car audio hope i'm not too behind the times. Oh yeah as for head units the factory one is close enough to being the same size you can just go with the stock location but be sure you have a good solid rear mount on an in dash CD player or they will skip like crazy.

I have a single cab without the extra fuel tank. I have placed two 12" subs and two large amps behind my seat. In the doors, I have place two quality 6.5" speakers in the factory holes. The front speakers get their own amp and the subs share an amp.
Because I didn't want to cut the dash, I made a wooden console to sit on the floor, on the hump, like a van's doghouse engine cover. I mounted the head unit in the console I built. I like it a lot. My original plan was to add more speakers but the sound is so awesome, I don't need anything else. My project is done and the enjoyment begins.
just like they said, put speakers in the door panels, the 6x9's can fit behind the seat, but the subs I don't know cause I don't have any, HAHA. I have no idea where you would put the 2 other speakers at, there's no room left.
Yeah it makes sense not to put speakers 2ft away from eachother lol. But as for camping and fishing it would be nice to listen to some metalica
And I like rockin out lol. I am sure I will figure something out. I could cut holes in the dash for some little 5" speakers and then rewrap it with a silk or something hiding it. That way I could have 2 speakers in the doors (or kick panels), and 2 in the dash. And some kinda of sub box to hide behind/underneath the seat.... and run 2 small 100watt amps. One for the sub and one for the speakers so I get a nice sound distribution. I messded around in my old mustang and found out your stereo will sound like *** if you sound have something to power them and you just have the sub powered.... its unbalanced.
But yeah, i figured Ide go pick up one of those mounting plates from walmart and make a bracket for behind the CD player if there already isnt one.
When I got my stang, it had no radio or speakers, the radio was literally ripped out along with the harness. I had to cut and grind some mounting plates till I could get it to fit and cover up the broken plastic parts from when the damn tweaker ripped the stereo out. I rewired a new harness and all. Ran all new wires and everything. Of course I was putting in new carpet so that made it alot easier lol.
And I'm not goin to high dollar into it either. I'll get a decent CD player and a good set of speakers and sub, and get some cheapo amps. I dont wanna go to far into it, cause well gas has hit $4 a gallon and its scaring me. So this truck as my DD is killing me. I am already looking for a little honda or somethin so I can get to work. And then drive the truck occasionally.
And if I get a honda.... i will be ricing it out to the max!! lol.... stickers, fart can, neon lights, led lights, wing... etc. It will be funny as hell, then I'll sell it to some kid....I'll tell him its a JDM honda lol

haha that's funny.
dude, sounds good the way you're gonna have your setup; I hope you have fun jammin'.
don't worry about the gas prices it is hurting everyone.
The solution I used for space for subs behind the seat is this: I bought some really heavy duty aluminum sub covers from Kicker that cover my Memphis subs. It allows me to push the seat back against the subs. They are 10". It would be really hard to get anything bigger behind the seat and still stay within range on box cubic feet.
If you want to listen to music out side the truck mount some marine speakers in the bed and you can just use the fade to listen inside or outside make the bed speakers the rear and the interior ones the front, just get a head unit with a pre out for your sub that isn't effected by fade.

Yeah i dont think I'll have any problems mounting the sub, i have plenty of room behind there. I just need to find a spot to mount the second set of speakers. And thats cool how you guys actually have stereos in your trucks. I would have never thought any of you guys would have cared for a sound system in these beasts lol.
Yea I guess 19 9mm+P is better in some ways than 10 45ACP. Anyway to answer Hellion's comment, starting out with Memphis components helps a great deal with sound quality but another factor is the amount of "Metal" in these cabs. It seems to give a better more "live" sound. Of course when you get into some serious bass you will spend a lot of time fixing rattles.

theres actually alot of us here that care about music. not all of us are ancient
Do be aware that no one makes an adapter plate to directly fit the dash for after market stereos. You will have to be inventive to get the head unit installed in the dash correctly and make your own parts.
