Dead Battery
Hey guys my89 f150 just got the engine rebuilt in it. But now my battery light is on. I charged the battery and tested it, it checked out good. Then I tested the alternator and it was bad so I got a new one(tested it it's good) but for some reason if the trucks running and I take the - battery cable off it dies out. The battery gauge is low. It doesn't seem like the alternator is putting out. But everything looks good. I NEED HELP!!

hmmm is the voltage regulator working? I am not sure if on that year if they are internal or external. If they are internal then you have a bad alt, even though it is tested fine. If it is external then bring that part to the store and have it tested.

The electrical wire connection that hooks on the alternator is notorious for being bad on this vintage of F-series. They sell a pigtail of sorts that they recommend you solder on. I would guess this electrical connection may be your problem.

I've had this problem too.
Most likely the plug.
A replacement alternator pigtail is around $10 at any autoparts store.
Get some dielectric grease for the socket to prevent terminal corrosion.
Solder and shrink tube the splices.
