I know this isnt a 7.3 question, but I need some advice on what to do with tranny I have in another pickup. The pickup is a 99 F250 5.4l 4x4 w/ 220k miles. The thing has been running fine w/o issue, but the check engine light came on and it started running like crap. I took it to a friend of mine and he pulled the codes, found a faulty solenoid pack in the tranny. I guess it causes the motor to go into a limp type of mode, thus the reason for the instant crappy running. Anyway ordered a new solenoid pack and figured we would be good to go. Tonight he pulled the pan and called me to come have a look. The magnet is covered with metal shavings. I mean majorly covered with shavings. We got to looking at the tranny and it seems like could be the stock tranny.
My question is what you guys think the odds of slapping the new solenoid pack in and having it run fine, or do I need to swap the tranny. I am trying not to tie up too much $$ into it.
I had the same type of problem with my 2500 Ram, got a code for a solenoid got the part and droped the pan and there was alot of shavings on the magnet. I put the solenoid in and changed fluid and filter and it did fine till I traded it for the PSD. Granted I only put about 3K miles on it but I was towing a 10-12K toy hauler with it and pushing it hard up the mountains.
They put those magnets there for a reason and you are seeing it. How would you like to have all those shavings floating around in the fluid?
.
As far as answering your question about whether it would fix the solinoid problem, I couldn't tell you the answer to that one.
I wonder if it got clogged with debris and a cleaning wouldn't clear up the problem.
