Fuel Filters

I know this has been discussed here before but I couldn't find it with the "search" option. I was at Advance Auto Parts to buy a fuel filter for my 93 IDI 7.3. They wanted $25 for it and it wasn't a Wix which is what I usually buy. Can anyone tell me what brand I can buy that is REASONABLY priced and still does a good job? Thanks. Tom

The cheap ones I've bought end up leaking around the plastic bottom threaded portion, so I've used Ford Motorcraft since, with less problems. How much is pulled over at the side of the road with fuel pissing out all over your hot engine worth saving a few bucks on????

I agree. The only reason I wanted something more reasonable, is I just converted to biodiesel and had to change a filter with only about 400 miles on it. I figured I may have to do it again soon. When all the crud is gone, I will go back to WIX or equivilent. How much are the Ford Motorcraft?

dont mean to hijack the thread here but when i was at my local napa buying my last fuel filter they had to types. the one that you screw the bottom plate on with the bleeder valve and sensor. and then they had a 1 piece design with a built in bleeder valve and a port to plug your sensor off of the bottom plate into. i went with the original screw on bottom because i didnt know anything about the other type. have any of you tried the other ones?

original filter

built in sensor and drain

Fuel Filter Replacement 7.3 1992

TomD, 1957F100 , KJLYPW: I have never changed the fuel filter on my 1992 7.3 non powerstroke. I have the new filter (Autozone, Luber Finer P/N LFF5824B) about $25.00. The BIG question: Can y'all walk me through the process of changing the filter, as I'm not familar with the pitfalls etc.

its pretty simple actually, you just unscrew the old filter from the mount on the engine. you should put a container or something under the filter when you unscrew it because there will be fuel in it. then you have to unscrew the bottom off of the old filter and screw it onto your new filter. you should have got a new o ring with the new filter. once you have screwed the bottom on you just fill the filter with diesel or some like to use a additive like diesel kleen. then screw the new filter onto the mount and start the truck.

does your wix filter have the port for the sensor as well as the built in bleeder screw?. if your filter does have the sensor port was it as easy as pulling the sensor from the old bottom piece for the filter and installing it in your new 1 piece filter?

7.3 Fuel Filter, p.s.

1957F100: Thanks for the info. One other question. Do I have to unplug a sensor wire and a drain tube before I start unscrewing the filter?

Me too, I started using wix#33411, didn't know 33617 would fit, i may try that one, How much are they? 33411 average around $30 . Advance Auto Parts wants $55 for the Fram version of this filter.

I don't use the original filter anymore on my 94. I pitched the fuel filter with the plastic bottom. I went with a "regular" filter. They are allot cheaper.

I don't figure I need a sensor. I change them at every oil change and if I have that much water in my tank I will fix that. I do drain my old filter and look to see if much water is in there. Then I would catch a problem.

I use the Baldwin version of the one piece filter the Baldwin BF1222-SP
If you have a Truck Pro anywhere nearby they sell those things cheaper than what napa sells theirs for.
