Truck not starting.
And as the title states, heh...have a kind of specific reason for joining up at this specific time. Would greatly appreciate any help with my problem.
So here goes. I have a '93 F150 XLT, 5.0, 5 speed, extended cab, dual tank with about 190k miles. I bought the truck off an older gentelamn at the end of last sumemr because his leg hurt him too much to work the clutch everyday. It was (and still is) a nice looking truck. A few small scratches, and a dull dent or two, but nothing major cosmetically. Mechanically? It's only given me minor issues up till a few weeks ago. Oil leaks, the fact the brakes hadn't been changed since it rtoleld out of the factory (That was a nasty surprise when they finally wore out...on the road..), and some minor radiator leaks. Oh, and the fact the neutral safety switch had gone out on the last owner an d he rigged up a bypass that in one position let the ignition function as normal, and in the other disable the ignition but let the brake epdal crank the engine. It was..interesting...but of no real concern to me as I never messed with the switch.
But I kept all that under control. About two and a half, three weeks ago however, I was at work, tried to start my truck...and nothing. Couldn't figure ito ut, jsut gotten back from break (was only trying to start it to pul lback some, was in some bushes) and jsut left it for later...it'd been finicky before afterall. That later luckily came about an hour later since it was a slow day (work at a Go-kart park) and as I was walking to my truck...there it was...my starter was hanging by its cables underneath my truck.
Apparently (as I('d never looked at it till then) it had been secured by only one bolt and that had been sheered off. I don't believe it occured when I tried to crank the engine because I never got ANYTHINg out of it after I parked...just emptiness...so I think I hit something when traversing the backwoods behind the park I work at. Regardless...some buddies helped me push start it and I hit up Advance the next day. Went through one starter that was defective and another that I sheered the solenoid stud off trying to conenct the cables. On the third one, I got a different brand and had it benchtested and okay, it went on right. Great. Still wouldn't crank.
The motor would crank, I mean...but it did so VERY slowly. Not enough to turn over. Except once, and that was with a jump and after about two seconds, it died in a cloud of black smoke ocming out of the engien bay. That went away immediately and it would not start back up. Everyone (including me) thought it was electrical...so a new battery, new ignition coil, new terminals, and a wire check later...still nothing. A LITTLE higher cranking, but not much. So I had it towed to AAA and their word was a partial engine siezure. I'd never heard of that before (but I'm only eighteen and still learning alot) But neither had my dad who's been working on cars his whole life on the driveay, nor some mechanics I talked too at work. So we had it towed back to work on it some more electrically.
We replaced the battery cables, did an oil change (Was down to 2 1/2 quarts apparently, think I might have furthered the oil leak when I lsot my starter) and replaced the fender solenoid. Still...nothing. Except a little bit more cranking...but not enough. Went through the ol' Haynes manual again and discovered a little tidbit, talking about causes of slow cranking. Partial Engine Siezure was listed...
So...to make a long story short...my truck won't start. It cranks abnormally slow. We've replaced the battery cables, the battery, the starter, the solenoid, the igntion coil, it has oil, it has fuel...but won't start.
So a couple questions. Anyone here experienced or heard of an engine siezing *partially*? Any other ideas of what may be causing this problem or what may need to be checked? Could it be something simple (we checked the fuses, one was burned out but we repalced it to no gain) like one little wire? Or is it time to to pull the motor and do a rebuild?
And sorry for such a long post...want to make sure all the details are there in case anyone wants to take a stab at the problem. And again, hello all, glad to be here, and thanks in advance for any help.
