I'm trying to figure why my 92 e-150 wont start, and have replaced the starting relay along the way. I'm not sure I hooked it back up correctly. I put the little wire on the S terminal. One big red wire is on the M terminal, as dictated by the 2-prong wire harness. The other prong is on the B terminal along with 3 unknowns. Can someone tell me if thiers looks the same? Photo attached shows M terminal at 3 o-clock..
Unable to look at my solenoid at the moment, the starter wire at the starter is a prone wire for corrosion and failure ( a long time ago there was a service bulletin about this) The small (12 gauge?) at the starter is what I'm talking about.
Also, the B terminal nut appears to be not entirely engaged with all threads which is suspicious to me as to proper wiring. This solenoid is what "clicks" when ignition key is turned to the "run" position. It also powers up various systems too when it connects.
i.e. power windows, radio, wipers.
What other symptoms are you experiencing? Or recent history of this trouble.
NO. I spoke too soon. It's dead again. At least I know the wiring is correct. Same problem: I can hear the buzzing of the console and the clicking of relays, but get no motion in the starter or flywheel.
New battery, starter, and relay, (and alternator) but still no go. Saturday We pulled the starter and hotwired iut on the bench to validate operation. It worked as expected. Then we wired it into the truck without engaging the flywheel, to validate those connections. Again it operated as expected. Next we turned the flywhel by hand to be sure the innards were not siezed. Also turned the motor by hand (from the front lug) to prove it would turn. Finally we made an attempt to start with jumper assist, and VROOM!! it came to life.
I drove it around on errands that day, starting it 5 times without issue.
Tuesday I go to take it to the city for emissions testing and got disappointed. Tried to add power with jumper cables, but no good.
I am starting to wonder if the starter is short on torque. Or if the battery is short on amps.
That terminal looks funny because it has a copper spacer under those wire-ends. They were too fat to go down between the plastic 'ribs'. The spacer came with the unit from NAPA. -J
