1 rocker arm oiling issue???

Hello everyone

I have posten the same thread on the Y-block forum as well, but I wanted some feedback from u guys (and girls) as well.

I have been reading some in this forum to get some feedback on my issue but not been able to find exactly what I'am looking for.

My problem is that I dont get oil from the rocker arm shaft to the rocker arm exit holes (or whatever it's called) on either side of the rocker. It is only one rocker that has this problem.

I have good oil flow from the owerflow holes on both sides, and when I am looking on all of the rocker arms I have a good oil flow on all pushrods and valvesteams accept for this one and only.

I have tried to flush the rocker arm with lubrication/solvent oil in the exit hole and I have a flow thru to the rocker arm because it exits around the shaft. I have also pushed the rocker arm to the side so that I could do the same thing with the hole in the rocker arm shaft, and it also showed to be open pass way.

How does the rocker arm locks like on the ID is there any groove that passes the oil flow from rocker arm shaft hole to the exit holes on the rocker arm. I was wondering if this groove is clogged up and thats the reason why I am not getting any oil to this rocker.

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Howdy,

I verified that mine had oil getting up there by removing the rocker shaft and first verifying that the hole in the shaft lined up with the supply holes in the mounts.

I then removed the distributor and used a 1/4" drive 1/4" socket and extension to turn the oil pump by hand. (drill or crank type speed wrench....turn it CCW)

I was able to get 50+ PSI turning it by hand. you then may have to turn the crankshaft to get the hole in the camshaft to line up with the hole in the cam bearing that sends oil up thru the head and to the rockers (if you have those types of cam bearings) Once I got them lined up correctly, I had a "gusher" on both sides!

I had my 292 rebuilt (pics in my gallery) a year ago or so. I still haven't gotten it installed yet because I'm doing other things like changing the trans, rear axle etc...

If you cannot get oil up thru the head after doing the above things you may have either plugged oil passages or the cam bearing may have moved and closed off the hole.

Older engines sometimes have the oil passages clogged. Some people in the old days didn't change oil chronically (or at all in some cases !!) like we do these days.......also the detergents weren't as good and some people intentionally used non-detergent oil.

Cheers,

Rick

Yes well I dont have the problem of getting the oil to the rocker arm shaft but from the rocker arm shaft to the rocker arm is a nother question.

Remove the rocker shaft and you can remove the end plugs and clean inside. I would assume the rocker in question is on the end of the shaft? Possibly opposite of the drain tube? If so the rocker shaft is full of crap. Dissasemble completely and clean and clean some more it will be fine.

Actually its the 4:th valve from the drain tube on the left bank seen standing in front of the pickup. I was wondering if there where a groove on the ID of the rocker arm that maybe could have clogged up.

I was planing of dissassamble the hole rocker arm assamble completley and clean everything carefully.

What torque should I use when remounting the rocker arm assembly to the heads.

Is their anything that I should know when performing this. Its my first time.

Best regards
Jimmy

I used a 10" 1/4-inch socket extension and a 1/4" socket to spin my oil pump also. Two words of advice: first, I had to grind down the socket exterior wall thickness to get it to fit down to the oil pump drive shaft. And second, AND THIS IS THE BIG ONE, make sure your socket will stay on the extension shaft!!!!!!!!! Epoxy it or tack weld it or use voodoo, but make sure it stays on. Mine dropped off and fell deep into the engine. I had to remove the oil pan to look for it and it was no where to be found. I used flexible magnetic wand and probed everywhere and didn't find the socket. I finally rotated the engine very slowly by hand and the socket dropped out. It had fallen on top of one of the crankshaft counter weights!!!!
