Hi everyone I was thinking of buying a used ranger for a work truck instead of using my diesel f350. What I'm wondering is what kind of mpg's can I expect out of an extended cab ranger with a campershell and about 400#'s in tools? I'm looking to spend no more than $6000. on the truck. What year, motor & trans should I be looking for. I do mainly in town driving rarely going over 55 mph, not a lot of stop and go but there are a lot of hills around here. Can I realisticly expect to get 20 mpg's or better? Any input would be helpful. Thanks
Unfortunately the 2.3 and 3.0 engines are a bit lacking in 'power'... they still haul well enough, just don't expect a race truck.
Well - I own both a 3.0 and a 2.3 - they both make their power at the high rpms, the 3.0 is a little lacking, but the 2.3 has plenty of power and much more efficiency ...
My '99 gets about 17-18 mpg combined driving. The '07 gets 24-27 mpg in the same conditions, but its 2 wheel drive.
Get your extra cab with the 2.3 duratec and 5 speed and you will get your mpg you seek. With 6 grand, look for between an 02-04. All 01's didn't have the duratec, my 01 had the 2.5 lima, it was a mid year change I believe.
