Hi! im running two twelves in my truck and the alternator is just not keeping up. I installed it and had to disconnect it cause i could hear my fuel pump not working properly and my lights were all dimming. Bronco graveyard sells a 170amp alternator for 195 for the 5.0 and 5.8 but i have the 300 big sixer. Can i use that alternator and modify anything or does anybody know of another alternator made for my little engine??
If by saying you are running two twelves you mean dual 12 volt batteries, any stock alternator should keep up fine in a properly maintained vehicle. If you cobbled together connections and don't have identical batts, you will have problems with not charging or parasitic discharge. Go over your electrical system and find the bad or questionable connections including grounds and starter & alternator connections and get two matched batteries.
Two sub woofers and amps? Yea, get a 200 amp alternator. If the charging system maintains 14+ volts with amps off, and goes down with amps on, it is a sign the alt is too small. Still, go over the connections and make sure everything is OK. Bad connections will kill the ability of the alternator system to feed the battery charging duty and the electrical load duty.
i had issues with a ground wire some guy sold me that wasnt really the thickness it said it was. Im using both ground and positive 4 gauge wire. Running only one amp but it is still a good 1600 watts at peak. (spend alot of time their) I have a capacitor because i was getting some whining noises from the alternator and the readings drop from 14 volts to about 12 when the subs hit. Checked all the wiring, battery wires are kinda bad so im going to change the ground on the battery and the positive on saturday with some new ones. I still want to get an alternator but as far as one that will bolt into my truck, i dont know were to look. I emailed a company and got a quote of over 500 bucks.....no thanks! Will one from a 5.0 fit my engine at all??? Thanks for the responses!
And if the cost of a high power alternator gives you sticker shock, you could fabricate up an auxiliary alternator mount and get a self exciting regulator add a one wire alternator straight to the battery.

i wanted to see if anyone had attempted this before and could drop some tips or advice on it.
