You betcha...1953/72 Ford F100's could be ordered with the Borg-Warner 3 Speed Overdrive.
The 1953/64's used the T-86 unit, the later trucks used the T-85N unit.
The cars also used the same transmissions from 1949 thru 1967.
Gas mileage: Around town, don't expect much of a change, but on the highway, it's a different story.
Over 20 MPG is obtainable, depending on driving conditions and your speed.
Would you believe 28.7 MPG in a 1965 F100 with a 390?
On flat terrain at 45 MPH, that's what I got on a rod run on old Route 66 from Seligman to Topock AZ back in the late 1980's.
My usual highway mileage is around 22.
