Thanks to all for your input on our search for indentification of 68 ford industrial motor. In my last thread left out the facts that the dist.is at rear,and oil filter is at left rear. Found a cutaway of a 55 317 in Motors Truck Manual #8 and it appears to have some of the same external nuances. Namely the two ribs running up,over, and down the valve covers the short way on either side of the two hold nuts and the dog leg in the front breather tube. In the manual they say the 279 and 317 are in the same family. Was this the start of the MEL's ?? If it is, what are the rest of the cu.in. numbers in latter years if any ?? Or are they really Lincoln motors as BIGJOB F7 asked in a previous thread ?? I have a pretty good reference library but its got a gap right where I need it. Bill, the Lincoln “Y block” was the first overhead valve V8 from Ford and ran from ’52 – ’57. Displacements were 279, 317, 341 and 368. It had hydraulic lifters and “normal” intake passages instead of the over-and-under style of the Ford Y-block. The MEL is a different engine family and ran from ’58 – ’68. It’s displacements were 383, 410, 430 and 462. Don’t know if this helps you any.
