I was watching an old rerun on one of the Premium movie channels on Directv last night. It was a 1992 comedy
movie with Nicholas Cage called Trapped In Paradise. Pretty good movie.
Anyhow, when Cage and his "brothers" in this film stopped to use a pay phone in New Jersey, the gas station sign in the background said......
You know, I have some gas in a sealed gas can in my garage that I bought for probably $2.89 a gallon. I'm thinking of eBaying all 5 gallons. Stuff should be a collector's item by now! Bidding starts at $3.50 a gallon. What a deal!

You're crazy! Why sell it right now? By Christmas of 2008 it will be worth $7.00 a gallon!
Remember when $0.39 a gal meant digging the change out from the seats...
I have some 3 yr old premium with stablizer in the boat should sell it at the boat dock
Well 1 - I can remember those days as well (I have been driving for over 25 years). And I can also remember coasting my '66 Mustang in on fumes and grabbing all of the change that my buddies and I had to get it going again!
I remember when I was in high school and working in a Richfield station in Olympia,a dollar's worth was 5 (five) gallons. We didn't have auto shut-off nozzles and sometimes you would spill if you weren't watching. The fun part about working in those days, was that they tried to hide the gas fillers and you really had to look for them. Some mid '50's chevs had them in the tail-lights and other makes had them behind the license plates..The other thing was the hood releases..Good Grief..Early '50's Chevs has 35 lube points..
Gas got down to $.16 in the summer of '59 in a gas war and you still got the S&H green stamps..
We have a shut down gas station in town, and it shows $1.10 a gallon while the open one down the street shows $4.15 a gallon for the cheap stuff. I remember when to fill up my mom's car it was $12.00 and now its close to $50.00.
WHAT DID S&H STAND FOR? MY WIFE WANTS TO KNOW AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.
I found this:
A recent spate of newspaper and magazine articles regarding the electronic makeover of the venerable Sperry and Hutchinson Company into S&H Greenpoints has revived a lot of memories among the general population and generated a buzz among collectors.
S&H, which first introduced Green Stamps in 1896, reached its zenith during the 50's, 60's, and 70's, but had begun to fade when sold in 1981. Barely surviving over the subsequent two decades, the company was purchased in 1999 by Walter Beinecke, the great-grandson of original co-founder Thomas Sperry. With headquarter walls lined with old S&H ads purchased on eBay, Beinecke and CEO Rod Parker have begun to transform S&H into a combination online and card-swipe presence.
I can remember when I first started driving gas was $.35/gal. I could fill my Pinto up for $6.00. In the mid 80's I do not remember ever putting over $12.00 in it with the tank almost empty. I remember buying oil by the case for under $12.00. I also remember when I was a kid an ice cream cone was $.05. I must be old.
