According to Ford chief engineer Pete Reyes by the 2007 model year the reliability scores for the 6.0 PowerStroke topped those of the tried-and-true 7.3-liter. PickupTruck.Com - First Drive: 2008 Ford Super Duty
Well, it`s a Ford engineer doing the talking but still this sounds good. I know our RM still has their 99 and the 03 PSD`s as well now a new 08 F350, a neat fleet.
Guys, guys, guys, dont get too excited! Statistics can be manipulated to say whatever they want them to say. It would be interesting to find whats all included in these 'reliability scores'.
Here is some food for thought - how long should an engine be run before you get all horny and say its the greatest?? I see they are referring to the 2007 model year about the time of the 2008 launch w/6.4 engine. Therefore the oldest engine they are referring to was barely a year old!!! Is it just me or does this appear to be a bit of smoke blown up someone's butt???
Unless I am the only one who thinks an engine should be in service just a bit longer than this before making a bold statement like that?
No need to get overly excited, this is exactly how modern day advertising works......And everyone goes with nothing less than bold statements, smoke and mirrors! It`s always the latest, the greatest and so much better than anyone else`s......
Having said that I do think the later 6.0`s were much better than the early ones. Mine is still humming delivering 18.5 mpg @ 120-140 kph with good power.
Not a clue on the 6.4`s however except for what I`ve read in the 6.4 forum and there it seems like most owners are fairly happy and not dumping them like some would have you believe.
Some early problems with radiators but the biggest problem is acceptable fuel mileage - they even came out with a 3.55 ratio in later models to try to get mileage up a bit.
Fuel mileage/10-13 mpg on the 08`s is bad but a tuner with DPF/Diesel Particulate Filter delete will help alot, possibly all the way up to 23 mpg. Of course there goes your warranty out the window......
One more good thing about the 6.4 is that it`s supposed to be super quiet. The RM crews aren`t happy with the new 08 F350, the foreman can sneak up on them.....
There is some information on the last of the 2007 models having different head bolts but I am not sure on this. Most of the earlier engines have been 'upgraded' to the better parts in areas like egr coolers, etc. The programming now cycles the turbo vanes at idle to prevent the sticking issues of the past and some of the sensors have been shut off to prevent some of the finnicky(sp?) behavior.
I have had one of the most problematic ones out there and through all of this have learned much about this engine. Its basically not bad except that for my application where the truck must work to earn its keep, the headbolts are not strong enough and its the same on all models except the rumor of the last 2007 models. I have a heavy foot and i will guarantee the headbolts would fail on any 6.0 with what i pull and how hard I make it work. Once the spaghetti substandard headbolts are replaced with ARP head studs, its a totally different story.
An EGR cooler replacement, an oil cooler replaceement, an EGR blocker plate to keep exhaust gases out of the cooler, and a programmer with mild power improvements and an EGR shut off will make it work much, much better. The latest inductive heat strategy reflash is a good one to run. There will always be some sensor replacement issues but its not that bad to have them diagnosed / replaced. The stock intake is good but the exhaust could stand to be opened up some. A few well informed posters talk of a water filter installation. Also, something on the fuel system but cant recall what it was - some type of bypass or something that was supposed to help with injector longevity.
Buy one with warranty and blow the gaskets out of it. Get studs installed and the biggest weakness of the engine will be fixed on warranty!
i believe it. yes, there's been numerous problems, but if you do some searching, the 7.3 has had her share as well. i know countless tradesmen with 6.0's and they love them to death. keep in mind that these are almost all stock trucks, driven by mature individuals who take care of their equipment. i wouldn't hesitate to buy a late '04-07 at all...
