I live in Florida and have a 2005 Exp XLT. A/C went out a few months ago and first estimate was $1200 to replace accumulator which got eroded by my parking under Oak trees and the leaves creating acid which ate away the interior parts. I passed on that. Went to an a/c specialist who showed me a leaky seal under the truck. Approx $200 later, the seal was replaced and system charged. Six days later, my wife calls to inform me that the a/c isn't cooling at all. I'm taking it back to the specialist for check-up but would appreciate some added insight. A/c controls are manual and all "seem" to work. Just no cold air blowing. Almost like it's stuck on vent and not a/c.
Is the Oak tree leaves something that actually happens? I've only had the car for 3 years and others around my neighborhood have trees that drop on their car. In-laws have trees and have had no issues with this.
The specialist found (after dye check) that one of the hoses for the a/c was cracked and the freon was leaking down the hose onto the undercarriage and perhaps disguising itself as a bad o-ring. It was spraying out so much the mechanic got it on his shirt and glasses as he was looking at it with the UV light! The are crediting me the $180 for the first "repair" and the new estimate was $480. Minus the $180 I already paid gives me about $300 to get this fixed. Still much better than the $1200 that I was quoted first to replace the parts in the dash which wouldn't have fixed it. This gets done tomorrow and so I'm hoping it resolves the issue.
I didn't see anything that prevents me from promoting a repair shop in the FAQ for this site, but I will wait until tomorrow before putting their name out. Also, if it's not ok, I hope someone would tell me before I get myself in trouble.
Ok then. If anyone is in the Ormond Beach area, I'd recommend Ice Cold Auto Air on US1. They fixed my a/c and were very accommodating on helping me diagnose and recommending someone to help with my issue with the cam phasers.
