4X? beef

Why is it that so-called truck fanatics, even in this group, cannot get the idea of what 4X means? If you have a 2wheel drive, your rig is a 4X2 not a
2X4, that is a piece of wood. And, obviously a 4 wheel drive is a 4X4.

True but what happens when your 4WD isn't as in the case of AWD? You've got to be precise after all.

Not only that but you're also only sending power to the two wheels with the LEAST traction.

Don't even go there with the "18 wheeler" designation for a vehicle with 10 wheels.... But yes, the 2x4 reference is rather wooden.

> obviously a 4 wheel drive is a 4X4

I thought the advertising that started that meant 4 wheel drive with a 4 speed manual, hence 4x4?

So my Exploder would be a 4xA as it has an automatic?

Soon someone will wonder what the "442" stood for on certain Oldsmobiles...

I know XLT means "Extra Large Truck".

The formula is '#of total wheels' X '#of drive wheels'. Hence 4X2 has 4 wheels, but only 2 of them are driven. 4X4 has 4 wheels and all 4 of them are driven, etc.

442=4 barrel carb, 4 speed, 2= dual exaust. I am pretty sure this is right, I heard it somewhere.lol

4 = 4 barrel carb
4 = 4 speed
2 = 2 door (coupe)

The dual exhaust is a misconception.

So I have a 4X1.5 since I have a LS in the rear and one wheel has to start slipping before it becomes a true 4X2. But since I have a locker up front I become a 4X3.5 before becoming a 4X4 in the slippery stuff. Is that how it goes? But then mine is an FX4. How many wheels is F?

All I know is that when I get stuck, I turn my little switch, a light comes on, I feel a clunk and then I'm not stuck any more.

Just so I don't ruffle any more feathers than I have already, I've been joking the whole time (except the 442 stuff).

IIRC, you know, 1965 is a long way back, 4bbl 4speed 2(dual) exhaust.

(That would be the year we discovered that if you used our spelling on the last name on one subscription, and then the common spelling on the renewal, you got two copies of Hot Rod mag for a year. I still have the one with the SOHC on the cover. Next time I dig that out, I'll look for an Olds ad...)

They were all 2 doors, they all had duals.

To start with, they all had 400s, and 4bbls and 4 speeds.

Later automatics, 4oo, 4bbl, 2(dual exhaust)

Pete Kost, out of the Olds dealer in Everett Washington, ran one at our local strip, the Arlington airport strip. I remember seeing an ad in the paper selling one of his cars...."...this was Pete Kost's car, so test drives will be with the salesman only."

Back to 2x4, a friend used a section of 2x4 to help "jack up" the back of his GTO.... Not very effective.

But wait...this one was clearly made from a 2x4 but is lifted like a 4x4 but is actually a 4x0. What do I call it?
