I have recently moved to a new place that has a well. I had city water hooked up to the house once I moved in because I didn't like taking a shower with low water pressure. Now I use the well for my outside water faucet and it's time to open the pool. It was filled last summer by the former owners so it only needs to be filled up to the filter holes. I'm new to wells and pumps and could use some advice. It is better to have the water turned up full force so the well pump stays on, or should I turn the water down low so the pump cycles on and off more often? I dont want to screw up the pump.
better for your pump to run continuously, provided your well can provide enough water for it to run continuously. not good for your pump to run dry.
There is a sand mine beside my place that uses well water so I'm thinking there is plenty of under ground water around here, but then again I dont know anything about it. This house was built in the 40's probably same well
I know my well only produce 14 gallons a minute and my water is about 500 feet deep, sadly enough this a good well for this area. the well on one of my fathers farms was pumping 800 a minute, when I was a kid there was maybe 6 well around here pumping over 3,000 gallons per minute each. but those days are gone.
the well has been the sole water supply for this house for the last 60 plus years. I had city water put in about 3 months ago. I filled the pool with well water for about an hour last night and the water looks pretty clear. I'm going to run it at 30 minute intervals through out the day so the pump can get a break. so far so good.
I have 6 wells on my ranch, from 30 GPM at the house to 1,400 GPM for irrigation. It is always better to run the pump continuously than intermittently. I have 2+ acres of lawn, and we irrigate twice a week, for 24 hour periods. I have a by-pass switch so I can run the pump for 24 hours at a time without stopping.
It is better to run the well continuous like fabmandelux said. It saves the wear and tear on the starter, contactor, check valvles, windings, and what not.
If your well water has a lot of iron it in. When done filling you will have to use iron out. After filtering it for the specified time you have to clean the filter. If you don't and you shock the pool the iron gets released from the filter and your water will look like it's loaded with brown algae. This happened to me. I have low iron in my well but the water truck that filled up the pool was loaded with iron.
