Hears how it goes. last friday I called a junkyard looking for a trans for my 89 C 6 7.3 4X4 the yard says he has one for $300 but don't know if its any good because the motor is bad. I called another yard that said yes we have one for $400 with a 30 day return. I chose to drive 46 miles thru Phila to buy it. I am down there for 1 hour 20 min. waiting for them to find it but no luck, so he gets on the phone and starts calling around. After 3 calls he finds one but instead of the $400 he needs $500 and I agree and it will be delivered there tomorrow. I noticed the numbers he was dialing and I seen the 3 numbers after the area code were 278 I asked him if it was the yard of the $300 trans and he said NO. I called the $300 yard again today and they said they just sold the transmission and when I asked them if it was sold to the $500 yard he said yes. but if I stopped the sale because it was not delivered yet it would be $400.
normal business transaction , shipping etc plus their there to make a profit or go out of business , does it have the same 30 day warranty
The first yard that quoted me $300 said your buying a core with no warranty. The 2nd. yard at $500 said it comes with a 30 day warranty. Thats why I did not want to deal with the first yard. When I called the first yard back and asked if they had a trans that I needed they said they just sold it and maybe in a few weeks it might come back. Now why would it might come back? Its not like your putting a alternator on, its more in the several hour range.
After thinking about this I have to say the second yard was the best deal.
And they are taking a rather big chance for the 200 dollars they marked the price up.
yeah its a gamble but for $200 more your only out time if its junk. But the might be back thing makes me think they are giving the other yard the opritunity to bring it back if its no good.
I will let you know next Sat. if this trans is any good. If no good I will send my trans down the road for rebuilding. I don't have much faith in the trans that I picked up. So what do you think the 2nd. yard will do with the trans if I have to return it?
No idea............wrecker trans are a crap shoot......... ebay would be a better choice I would think. There are a lot of Ford clubs out there with members who do own rebuilds check in your area.......C6 has been around years.
the one thing to remember is when dealing with a trans like the c-6
is that it has been out of production for over ten years
so unless the salvage trans has been overhauled recently enough that its evident
you most likely are buying a problem due to internal seal degradation
and at $500.00 a bench overhaul wouldnt be much more
I was at the Ford dealer today getting a set of horns and I noticed a poster displaying a rebuilt transmission with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. I asked them if there was one available for my truck (1989 F 250 4x4 7.3) and they quoted me a price of $900 but if I wait until june 01 there is a $100 rebate. I will find something wrong with the one I picked up and return it and go the Ford route.
