'60 292 Y... will it ever perform.?
"figure this should get a few hits...
Is it possible to increase the performance on a 292? I have a 1960 F500,.. and she don't do hills too good..... it'll get there (pullin a Steam Roller if necessary),.. but don't be in a hurry.
Any, I repeat,.. ANY advice would be appreciated. Can you get headers.?? what intake.?? Tuning.?? anything... at this point,.. $$ is not an issue.. I'm looking for the possiblities.
I'm not too excited about changing engines, not totally out of the question,.. but like the unique of the 292.
Thanx in advance for all your help. "
I'll be using hypereutectic pistons with no valve notches in a 292 rebuild currently in progress.
I'm using the original heads on this 1956 engine, but I would have preferred the ECZ-G heads for their superior chamber shape. Good quench and good swirl from what I hear.
John Mummert has a selection of camshafts. And you may want the 1.54 rocker shaft assemblies from 1956-1957.
Pertronix, or better yet, Pertronix II ignition. The II ignition adjusts the spark intensity depending on load, etc. Saves the plugs when you're cruising by turning down the spark, but delivers a hot spark when you've got the pedal mashed to the floorboards.
I'd use a cast iron intake in your application; better atomization of fuel due to better heat retention. 4bbl for sure. Holley carb.
Keep the temperature at 195 degrees; less friction between aluminum and iron at that temperature then at lower temperatures. I use synthetic oil for the reduced friction, better resistance to breakdown when hot, and better detergent properties.
Don't get crazy with the exhaust system. Small pipes for a small engine will get you better torque.
And maybe dyno-tune it?
