I just put a new alternator in an 83 GMC w/ a 6.2 and also 2 new batteries. The alt bench tested good but is not charging the batteries. I cut the original battery wire and ran a new one straight to a battery but its still not charging. Anyone have any ideas? I am tired of putting my charger on every couple nights so that I am not stranded somewhere.
Have you a red battery/alt light in the dash lights. If so does it light when you turn the ign. on? It sounds to me that you dont`t have a voltage from the ign. switch to excite the alt.
I agree, sounds like the regulator isn't coming on and/or the sense wire isn't connected properly. Get a test light, multi-tester and schematic and test the other circuits going to/from the alternator.

If set up like any of the other Chevy gas engines, it is probably because the fusible link is melted at the starter solenoid under the vehicle. Look in a Haynes and replace it with the correct size, should be either 12 or 14 gauge.
What I do for people.
I usually do is put a female/male connector on the wire and do the same with the fusible link and leave a piece of wire for the ringlet on the starter. That way when the link blows again (next jump start) I can take a spare link, with connectors on both ends, out of the glove box and get the vehicle going again in ten minutes. Because splicing under the vehicle is a real pain.
if it bench tested ok and you bypassed the batt wire, that only leaves 2 wires, one, the thick red one is hot all the time, test it...,and 2 the smaller wire is a ignition and either has a resistance built in the harness for this one(if it has a gauge) or the ignition runs thru the idiot lite bulb, there it gets its resistance, without the resistance the engine would continue to run after turning the key off.. so if the idiot lite bulb is blown the alternator will not excite and charge.. you should have a 10si or the lester # on the alternator should be #7127
