A question about shifter

I've read on here about others having the shifter break someplace near the steering column. What causes it? And are any year trucks better than the others? I sure don't need that happening when I'm moving my loaded trailer.

I suspect what you are talking about is the shift tube that runs along the top of the column. That is a common failure on Fords of that era, but I'm not sure if it is used on the F-series trucks. IMHO, the most common cause of the failure is the bolts that hole the lever on the bottom of the tube work their way loose and people start forcing the shifter up into park. Of the 15-20 of these I've done almost every person says that they had been having problems getting into park for some time before the failure, then I find the bolts loose when I take it apart. Those that bring them in when they start having problems getting into park I can just tighten the two torx bolts at the bottom of the tube and they go on their way with no other problems.
