Hi this is my first time posting and I am in need of some assistance I have a 2002 150 XL super cab 4x4 with a 5-speed and the 4.6 L V-8 I have a K&N Filter kit and a XLerator performance exhaust and I currently have 119.5k miles. My problem started about 4 weeks ago I was coming home from work and every time I pushed in my clutch to slow down to stop my truck would stall out this happened about 4 times I live about 20 miles from work. I was able to get it home. But then the next day I started it the idle raced very high and it would not drop down. I took it to a local dealer and he thought it could be a defective TPS so I replaced the TPS the high idle persisted I checked the FTE web site under the FAQ’s and the general consensus on any questions on a high idle is to replace the IAC valve. So I replaced that today and it fixed the idle but now I have what I can only describe as loud howling sound from the engine. I have some problems when I accelerate and when I am driving and take my foot the pedal the howling starts up again the K&N filter is a reusable one so I am planning to clean it and re-oil it to see if that makes a difference. So other than that I am stumped if any one has any suggestions It would help Thanks
I would start by cleaning the MAF sensor. It is the little wire inside the air intake just past the air filter. With a reuseable filter that uses oil, the oil can sometimes coat the wire and make the vehice run "funny". As far as the howling sound, check to see if you have the air filter housing put together correctly and there are no air leaks in the air intake. Good Luck and welcome to FTE...
Like streethealer said, make sure that the air intake was all put back together properly with no air leaks. Also, did you make sure that the gasket for the IAC valve is in there OK. BTW, be careful to not over oil soak the K&N filter after you clean it. Too much oil on it and it will gum up your MAF sensor and your mileage with suffer. Good luck!
The loud howling is what we Contour 2.5 owners call "moosing". IIRC, Ford calls it "hooting". I seem to recall there's a TSB somewhere in the archives about it.
It's due to an air intake and IAC valve resonance in the airflow.
What replacement IAC valve did you use? Ford or aftermarket? I'd start with investigating that.
I bouth a aftermarket IAC valve from the local NAPA the part is a bit bigger than the orginal one but it fit on the block correctly I checked the gasket it looked good maybe I will just repalce it with a new one and see if that fixes it Thanks for the suggestions they have been helpful.
