shifter on the column
Hey guys this is a great site for info. The shifter on the column of my 79 f250 4x4 doesn't sit back into place. It is an automatic, it shifts gears ok , a little sloppy but the shifter just sits there loose . Is there a spring or such broken? Thanks.

if its anything like my truck the colum its self is worn out where the pin runs through the shifter. i havent figured out a fix as of yet. look at your colum where the shifter meats it and you should see a roll pin. is it wallered out? im thinking im going to try drilling mine out a little bit and just shove a bigger pin or even a small bolt in it.

The shifter collar at the top of the steering column is a known weak point. It cracks and wears out and can cause symptoms you describe. Eventually it will break completly and you won't have any shifting. To check, you need to pull the steering wheel.
