I was watching Stacy David's Gear Headz show a few days ago and he said oven cleaner will work on the anodized trim. But there are lots of threads pertaining to cleaning anodized aluminum.
That is correct, Ben, however Easy Off does more than just clean aluminum - it actually etches it. This will remove the anodize conversion coat that is so difficult to get thru using a buffing/polishing wheel (it is actually several mils thick), but after it has done its work, it will have a white haze from being etched. Then you tackle it with the polisher - less work and time than trying to polish it from the get go. As said before, it then needs a protective coating to keep it nice.
That being said, since the shells are not true chrome anyway, I've seen guys have them powdercoated in "chrome" and they end up looking just like polished aluminum, only far less expensive than $600. A local vendor here will do one for about $115. I have powdercoating at my disposal at work, so my cost is only for the powder I use (probably ~$25 or so).
