ok, so last weekend my truck started running like it was miss-firing, but no check engine light. tookk apart the intake and found a lot of engine oil. I am running a k&n air filter but it had been a long time since i cleaned the filter so i knew it wasn't filter oil, plus it wasn't red. so i cleaned all of the oil out, and sprayed the MAF and IAT with elect. cleaner...all was well for a few days until today when it started acting up again. the best way to describe it would be a chug, especially at low rpm. my guess is the oil is messing with the sensors, but i don't know how or why there is so much oil getting into the intake. the pcv valve is new and working fine. what would happen if i disconnect these hoses and the plug the holes in the intake tube?
thanks for the help
Give it a try just don't do anything that is non-reversable. When I did the zoo-dad mod to my 5.4L, I had too much air forced up into the intake and got a check engine light. Had to mod the mod.....
I would bet it's your coils on top of the spark plug aka cops .
I just bought a 1999 5.4 f250 and it chugged and missed at low rpm and smoothed out higher up .
So I put some new super coils from eccel on and new iridium champion plugs in and it runs great now .
nice mod...may be just the angle of the pic, but it looks like water has a straight shot for your filter, hope thats not the case. about the COPs, at 50 bucks a pop i would hate to buy 8 and only need one. but without a mis-fire when i read the codes how could i tell which one is bad? only thing i can think of is buy one and swap it around til it runs good...any other ideas?
Misfires won't usually log a code on these SD's, especially the pre-05 ones.
The misfire COUNTERS, when read, will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. Only Ford and some mechanics can actually read those counters though, they need the right scanner.
If you buy one COP, and then move it around to each cylinder one at a time, you should find the bad one, if there is one.

Actually the area of the cut-out is on a 45 degree angle to the front. The metal tab with the Ford logo on it sticking out in front is the mod to the mod I was talking about. It blocks the head-on forced air as well as water, bugs, etc. I cut it out of the original heat shield that I cut off the muffler when I replaced it.
Try pulling the throttle body and seeing if you have a build up behind the butterfly. You could be sucking oil from the PCV, but that would be pretty bad. However, build up behind the butterfly can cause some issues, hunting idle and hesitation.
