for some reason my truck shifts very hard into 1st gear and actually grinds when i try to shift it in reverse. if any one has any comments or insight it would be greatly appreatiated.
i only know basics of the auto tranny, but my guess would be that you may have lost a planet carrier, or clutches...
I'm hoping im wrong!
Good luck, and welcome to Fte!
Before you get into the tranmission check the slop in the clutch pedal bushings mine had massive amounts of play and when I replaced them it made a big differance. Royal purpel ATF helped alot to. O yea our manny tranys use ATF.
Mine has been grinding going into reverse alot lately. The clutch pedal has been fixed and it still does it. Any ideas. I just take it easy going in so as to extend it's life.
I've noticed that if I let mine idle in neutral for a while and then try to stick it into reverse that it will grind, especially if the trans is cold. But if I first try to stick it into first or second and then go to reverse it will not. I don't think R is synchronized, so there's nothing to help mesh the gears smoothly when everything is rolling in there.
Your right that reverse in not synked. I have never had a problem with grinding going into reverse but it would pop out unless I double clutch it. Do you guys have that problem to? The pedal fix and royal purple helped.
Scatgo, I don't have any troubles popping out of gear. I changed my axles, xfer, and transmission over to RP a few weeks ago, but didn't notice much change in the shifting. My rig has ~228K on it, so I'm sure the transmission is well worn. I'm thankful it still works.
More than likely if you are not losing any stroke because of slack in linkage or weak master - slave cylinder than you probably have a weak pressure plate that isnt fully disengaging .
