429 not running right

429 not running right
Put a 429 out of a 73 marquis in my f150. did a fresh rebuild, and the only thing that is not stock is the cam (comp cam 270) and the distributor, cap, and rotor. I just cant seem to get this thing to run right. it should run a whole lot better than my 400 did, but it doesnt. it is real sluggish, and seems like it is not timed right. no matter where i move the distributor to, it doesnt run like it should! 
Any of you experts know what my problem is? my first thought, after timing, is that i need to get an adjustable valvetrain....maybe my valves are hanging open.
