95 psd,cc,dually,5sp,3"dp,4"exhaust, still has cat, Banks air filter(came with truck) drove app. 250 miles this weekend, used 3/4 tank fuel(rear tank) 300lbs in truck pulling 12' pop up, 60 mi freeway (65mph max)rest back road (55mph max), always change gears before or at 2500rpm, 15000 on fuel filter, air filter clean, using diesel klean add., do not have any gauges to check or watch, so dont have any data there,
ANY IDEAS? does this seem like excessive fuel consumption? havent had truck long, and only pulled a couple times, seems to use a lot of fuel empty also, never checked mileage, just comparing to other psd which gets 17-19.
could cat be clogging? low fuel psi? grasping cause i am newbie to diesel????
any input greatly appreciated
Back tank on your truck is the smaller tank. I you got 250 miles out of that tank pulling ANYTHING, you got good MPG. I believe its 16 gallon. Assuming that you DIDNT run it empty, (even if you did thats what I am calcualting it on) you got 15.625 mpg. Even if there is one gallon left in the tank, thats over 16.5 Not bad at all in my book.
Before you get excited about fuel consumption you should do the math...otherwise you are just guessing.
Rear tank is 18 gallons. 3/4 of 18 is 13.5...minus 1 gallon remaining in the tanks is 12.5..that's 20MPG pulling a load doing it your way...very doubtful.
BTW: It's miles traveled divided by gallons used. Start with a full tank and then refill to full again. "Full" is the only constant you can use doing the math.

X2, "estimating" fuel mileage doesn't really do much. Calc it out and see what you get.
Yep, our diesels don't reach deep into the tanks. It must be a diesel thing..not wanting to draw up all the crud and water.
All rear tanks are 18.2 gallons.
my bad, i thought the rear was 26 or so, and i agree that fill up to fill up is the only way to calc mpg correctly, my 4doorbronco has a 26 gal rear and i can get 350-400 miles on it, that is why i was getting a little excited. also, i was over estimating at 250 miles because i couldnt believe it was doing so bad, or so i thought. probably closer to 190-200 actual miles traveled. but like i said just a guess. gotta keep on your toes around here or you get called on it quick.
so rear tank is only 18, looks like time to update to a bronco rear, i think you can even get bronco tanks in 40 gal. anybody done one of these swaps???
He had a write up somewhere. The Fuel pickup tube needs to be lengthened and something done to the filler hose too. He may be here and let you know. BTW: I need to do this too, my rear tank is leaking.
True, I'm just afraid to check mine on my upcoming trip with prices the way they are. Just swipe the card and hide my head in the sand. I guess now is when I should be staying on top of it though.
