Saw an add for a 95 Ford Ranger for sale locally. I4 w/ the 5 speed. Thinking about buying it to replace my 85' F150.
The add states it's in good shape, but the "alternator makes some noise". Any bets as to what that could mean?
Also, they want $1800 negotiable, which is $500 or so over blue book. They originally wanted $2500. Either they don't know the value of the truck or KBB has it undervalued? What's a good price?
I havent had a chance to look at the truck yet. Any common failure points to look for?
I had a 93 with the I-4 and a 5speed. Power was low, gas mileage was in the low 20's. I just picked up a 95 with a 4.0 5speed for $350. I put intake gaskets in it and its back on the road. I get 22mpg and has really good power. I wouldnt pay more than a $750 for it
Price is relative. My dad sold his 1990 Ranger, 2.9L with the time bomb tick, leaky valve cover gaskets (if you ran it hard) and sketchy brakes for $1500.
In some areas, Rangers are dirt cheap, others, they are valuable.
Go see what "good shape" means, body's pretty but engine is ****ty, vice versa, inside's not so hot, etc.
Body has some dings and scratches. It can be buffed to looking decent.
Interior is okay. Ill probably never clean it anyway so who cares?
Now, for the mechanical:
Tires are pretty bad. Not much life left.
Alternator makes some noise. Sounds like the bearings are shot. The alternator looks like a tight fi; how hard is it to remove?
A/C Doesn't work. Owner says it worked up untill a few weeks ago, but still works everynow and then. Sounds like the valve controling the air mixture isn't working. Bad vacuum hose maybe?
Other than that, no leaks/drips/rattles etc. Pretty tight truck for the milage.
Id say it's between "fair" and "good" as far as blue book value goes, which would put it at $1000. Seller doesn't want to go below $1400.
Any ranger with a good body that runs is worth 1,500. They sell rusted out 88's a round here for 1,500 and don't blink an eye when asking. Alt is no big deal to change on a 4 cylinder, air more than likely needs a recharge. I would say it's worth 1,500 easy as trucks sell very high in my area and at these gas prices, 4 cylinder rangers are highly sought after.
