04 6spd ZF problem

First post.

i had my clutch replaced at the dealer a week ago. i took it in because it was grinding when i tried putting it in first. They told me it was the clutch. alright, i pay 1700 to get it done, go and pick it up and the truck is still doing the same thing! WTF! they then tell me it is the Synchro, that they would have to drop the tranny down again and replace the synchro. it would be another charge. Anyone else had Ford F them like this.

they did say they would not charge me the labor to drop it and put it back in though. I have bitched a pretty good bit the lady that helped me.

anyone had the 1st gear synchro replaced? know how much this will cost? it seems that my truck has just hit 150k and now things are breaking. knock on wood, the engine stays together.

sweet blog.

I've rebuilt many ZF 1319's. All they ever need is new synchronizers and forks. Seems odd that you didn't mention any grinding problems with reverse gear though. Normally, when the clutch is gone, you will experience grinding issues with both 1st and reverse. Be prepared to be told you need more than just 1 synchro ring.

thanks.

i have to shift into 2nd before shifting into 1st so i dont get the grinding.

even with having the clutch replaced and i get on the truck hard, i grind 2nd sometimes shifting from 1st.

i just want it back the way it was before it started messing up.

1st have you ever replaced the clutch before if not and it was the original clutch at 150k thats not bad i wouldnt be to upset about changing that but we could have told you the clutch doesnt make a sycro tranny grind the bad sycro does so now atleast you know what needs to be replaced and it probobly would have been a good idea to replace the clutch anyway if the trans was coming out so your not screwed to bad

i gonna try and read your post without periods lol.

yes it was/is the original clutch. it was making the syncro grind noise when i took it into the shop. thats WHY I TOOK IT to the dealer to begin with.

they tell me its the clutch.

i get the damn thing back and its still doing the same thing i took it there for.

im not mad the clutch was replaced, just dissapointed that its still making the same problem i had before taking, and now out 1700 bones.

OK, so why's $1700 to replace a clutch?!?

OK, I haven't done one in a newer truck, and none in like 10 years, but I've done 3 - 4 on my Maverick and 2 on a Pinto -- parts were a little over $100, and about 3 - 4 hours of work on the concrete.

When they replaced your clutch did they also replace the clutch slave cylinder? I had them go bad and it develops the same problem you're having. It's darn near impossible to get into first from a dead stop. Putting it in another gear like 5th then going into first seemed to help. But that was only a temporary solution.
Good luck.
