Need Help '87 460

Hi. I will explain what I have and then my problem..

I have a 460 out of a 87 F250 in a 89 chevy blazer I use just for off roading.
I've taken the old carb off and put a Holley 770 Dominator on it. MSD 6A with a blaster coil. No exhaust just open headers. The egr plate on the original mainfold is left in place. The jets for the 770 are stock. This is the carb recomended by Holleys site. checked for vaccume leakes and can't find any.

I can't get the truck to idle at any rpm less than 1300-1500. Then if you put it in gear it just dies... I was told the setup for this engine is 8* of timing however I'm not sure about that.

I'm pritty much a chevy guy trying to learn the ropes of the big bad ford... I've got it at about 20* of timeing now if I go to 8* it just backfires thru the carb.

Please help I want to make this a trailable rig but cant with the crazy idle speed.

OK.. first thing you need to do is go get a big "Powered By Ford" decal for the back window, the motor will immediately start to run better.

What firing order do you have the plugs wired for? It should be 15426378, the distributor turns counter clockwise, and cylinder #1 is passenger side front.

Ok I don't want to sound stupid but give me the run down for the rest of the cylinders and I'll check it. Does the rotor face #1 like on a chevy?

when you check the timing, did you pull the vacuum line off the vacuum advance? Have you checked your idle adjustments? Have you sprayed water/wd-40/rubbing alcohol/ether around the base of the carb and around your intake to check for leaks?

OK, the cylinders are numbered front to back 1-4 on passenger side and 5-8 on the driver's side. With the #1 piston on TDC of the compression stroke the distributor button should point to post #1, it's easy to get this 180 degrees off if you don't make sure the motor is on the compression stroke.

Yes vaccum was disconnected and yes I checked for leaks. Do you think is lack of back pressure?

check both ends of the big vacuum hoses, I have knocked off the brake booster hose at the booster changing a carb. It took most of a 12 pack to find it.
