Beginner questions

About 6 months ago my father gave me an '84 F150 4X4. The reason why he gave it to me was because it smokes like crazy (severe blow-by), has water in the oil, and leaks oil from everywhere. Basically the engine is shot and needs replacing or rebuild. I was hoping someone could help me find out what kind of engine and tranny I have, and a suitable list of replacement engines. OK so here's what I know:
It has a carberated 351 with automatic tranny. The sticker on the air cleaner says "4V H.O." The truck was made in Canada if that helps.
So my questions are:
Is it a cleveland or a windsor, or can you help me tell the difference?
How do you find out what kind of tranny it has?
My plans are to swap the engine for a good used one to get me through another Buffalo winter. Therefore I need to know what I have and what I can drop right into the truck. I would also like to attempt to rebuild this engine, however it would be my first and I would like anyones opinion as to whether this engine is too complex to rebuild (with the 4 valves/cylinder heads and all) or if parts are hard to get or very expensive.
Finally I have to mention I'm not as complete a newbie as I sound. I had a '68 F250 that i fixed up a few years ago and kept on the road, although I never attempted a project like this yet. Thanks in advance for any help.

It's a windsor. Cleveland's were never in pickup's and were only produced for about 3 years. Windsor's were produced from 1983-on...

The were only two automatic's produced. A C-6 which has (D,2,1,) for drive gears, and a AOD which has (OD,D,1) for drive gears.

4v stands for 4-venturi carb. The factory had a 4180 4-barrel. The 351 would be a 16 valve, 2 valve per cylinder. I would stick with a 351w, in fact, you might want to just get a rebuilt with a warrentee. The 351H.O, was produced from 1984 to 1987. It produces 210hp and 330 ft/lbs. It came factory with a 17" air cleaner and a low restriction exhuast. I'm not a fan of holley carb's, because the demand alot of tuning. But, if the carb is in good shape, and doesn't need a rebuild. Use it!

If you know someone that will help you rebuild your 351, you may learn alot and have fun. I intend to do a 302 or 351 build for a 1989 F-150 4x4 that had a 302EFI factory. I haven't ever built a engine for myself. But I have friend's who owe me time and their expertise.

With what you have, you might want to go with a short block (you'll need to turn your old block in for a core charge), take your heads to a machine shop and get them redone (200-300 bucks), either rebuild your Holley (yeah, they require a lot of tinkering, but then, that's why the dragsters run them, they can set them up in a variety of ways to meet weather and track conditions) or drop on an Edelbrock 600-650 cfm and get it back running. If I were you, I would run the tranny down and get it overhauled while your at it. It won't cost near as much for the overhaul if you already have your tranny out your truck anyway.

Good luck,

'82 F150 2WD w/351W (orig 300 I6)
