My tranny is upshifting in 2 stages. In other words, when going from 1st to 2nd, seems like it upshifts twice going into 2nd. Same way in 3rd and high. I have been told that this is normal for the ED04. This is the first ED04 I have owned.
It is suppose to shift just like another automatic transmission. Maybe its shifting down then back up. Have you checked the fluid level? It could be low and letting air enter causing erratic shifting.
Mine has its own mind too. It slides into each gear as it changes. It did it before and after a complete rebuild by a very good tranny shop. I asked about it and he said that some just do that. It has run and functioned fine so I tend to believe him. Must be the ghosts yours has.
Fluid is good, and not shifting down and back up. I had it rebuilt in july cause it was slipping in first. It shifted the same way begfore the rebuild. He told me that was normal shifting for that trans. Haven't had any probs, just dont like the way it shifts. I was thinking the guy only repaired 1st gear and did not rebuild as he stated. I had the ford house check it out and they said it was fine except the EEC showed a faulty fluid temp sensor. Which that may be my prob, because it shifts fine until it gets hot. Hmmm just dont know!! IceMan do you have the E40D in your 250, or have you owned one in the past?
Is it possible that the second shift you are feeling is the torque converter locking up? When I got my F250 I noticed that when acceleratin to highway speed I counted four shifts and I knew it wasn't a five-speed. Turns out one of the "shifts" was just the TC locking up. The drop in engine RPM felt the same as a gear change.
my 92 did it as well. its like it shifts and then settles into the gear. i read it was part of the design. after installing a shift kit, it has gone away.
i read about it on a thread on this site prolly last fall. supposedly it was part of the design to ease strain on the clutch assys as it shifted. i think they were a little too conservative because hardly anybody likes it.
oh thats weird. i think my 96 does the same thing but i never really noticed. i can tell a lot of difference in the rpm (no tach on mine) cuz i have a cat back exhaust but i couldnt figure out what the second drop in rpm was after the shift. time for a shift kit i hate the way it shifts now feels like a 7 speed
