the last couple days whenever I start up my truck(02 f150) I hear a squealing sound coming from the engine. when i open the hood it definitely sounds like its from the belt. when driving around whenever i hit the gas or the brake, the squealing speeds up or slow down accordingly. but after the first few minutes, the sound pretty much goes away all together and very rarely comes back until i turn off the truck and start it a few hours later.
im assuming its the timing belt. ive got about 50k miles on this belt but it doesnt look bad. i dont see any cracks and the grooves still appear to be there. other than replacing it, is there anything else i can do to get rid of the noise? would it be anything other than the belt?
I think you are refering to the serpentine belt. It could be that or a pulley or a bearing. Just replaced my belt, 02 with 109000k on it. 6 years old they dry out.
how do I check to see if its a pulley or a bearing? are there any things I should do?
i bought the truck used. and about 50k on the truck, it started to squeal. i put a new belt on and the squealing went away until now. and now im at 100k. maybe ive just had some crappy belts on but like yours i thought they lasted a lot longer.
Most guys use motorcraft, goodyear, or gates. I used a gates and I hope it will last. Otherwise when you have the belt off check the pulleys to see if they turn hard or wobble. Other than that I would go to a mechanic. I'm sure someone else will give you more ideas.
I'd agree the belt needs replacing. The tensioner could be weak too but most likely a belt that needs replacing due to the following hint you gave. To quote your post " but after the first few minutes, the sound pretty much goes away all together and very rarely comes back until i turn off the truck and start it a few hours later."Your battery may be contributing to the problem. If it's weak then your cranking the truck would drain power from it. The alternator will charge full on trying to replace the power you used cranking the truck thus possibly making the belt slip at the alternator pulley. Have your battery load tested where you pick up your belt, Advance, Auto Zone, etc.
I agree with the others that say the belt most likely needs to be replaced. Most likely it has stretched and the squealing you are hearing is the belt slipping.
TO check your pulleys take the belt off the engine. Then turn all the accessory and tensioner pulleys by hand and try to wiggle them forward and backward. If they all seem to be tight and don't squeak you can turn the engine on and see if the crank is making the noise or if it happens to be internal.
I use a Goodyear Gatorback belt but they are a bit hard to find in stores. Auto Zone at one time had them.
well i put on a new belt but the squealing remains. the pulleys all seemed to be on pretty tight. maybe one of them doesnt have enough grip and needs to be replaced. the top idler pulley and the tensioner pulley both look pretty shiny and feel slick.
Question, Is it a constant squeel/high pitched sound or a cyclic chirpping sound?
If constant it is more than likely a pulley/idler bearing going bad or it could be from a loose belt slipping past the pulleys due to a weak tensioner spring or a stretched belt.
If it is cyclic it is most likely due to dirt or rust in the grooves of the polly-V face of the belt.
A/C compressor clutch..... common problem on these trucks. Easy to replace.
hrm... if thats the problem Id definitely have to see somebody. not totally sure what that is haha.
Also clean the pulley's.Green scrub pad, fine sand paper......
ya know ive read a few things online about trying sandpaper but I asked somebody at an auto store about it and they said they werent sure that was a good idea. said if i didnt know what i was doing i could hurt the belt that way. but my pulleys do look pretty glossy.
Question, Is it a constant squeel/high pitched sound or a cyclic chirpping sound?
its definitely constant. the noise does come and go at random. but when its going, its definitely a constant noise.
im hearing it more regularly since i put the new belt on though. think im gonna try that green scrub pad idea.
