Speedo stopped working today , replaced speedo cable 6 months ago and was working fine , took off speedo and drove and the little cable end was not turning , are they suppose to turn when disconected and driving ? Is it already frozen up , do they come lubed ? Want to know before replacing again .
It should turn - if it isn't then the cable is bound up or the nylon gear in your transfer case is toast. They don't come pre-lubed, so i you didn't lube it up then you may have a problem with the cable.
I just replaced mine, and I took the cable out lubed it with syn grease and ran it back in the housing. Now all I need is a nylon gear because mine was gone.
I think you can get the gear from Ford or a forum sponsor, and you can also get the cable too.
The only thing you need to know for the new gear is the number of teeth on it. I know I just replaced mine it stopped working again though and it is a new cable with grease on it. I am going to have to pull it apart again.Your Ford dealer should have the new gear, and it is only a couple of bucks.
The gear is fine but when I turn it out of my borg warner 4 speed 2wd it seems to be a little binded and clicking , no kinks and still wouldnt turn at speedo with disconected . I got it at lmc and am going to try another sponsor , was working fine for a year , probably just bad part .
How do you know if the gear is worn , it is hard to tell , it has 367000 miles on it , could a gear make the the cable not turn if it is worn down ? Is there a measurment on the teeth , maybe my gear finally wore down because I can spin both cable ends by hand no problem and cable is 1 year old .
On mine the gear itself was not worn ,but on the inside of the gear, the little square hole in the center of the gear that the speedo cable goes into was round.I haven't pulled mine back apart yet but I am begining to think that my problem may actually be the speedometer. If you have any doubt as to whether it is worn down take it down to your parts guy then you can look at a new one right beside yours and you can tell the differance between them.
Tranny gear seems fine and cable gear seems fine and not stripped where cable gos , but when I spin gear on cable there is resistance , so lmc is sending me a free cable and ordered new gear from bronco graveyard , everyone says cables are not lubed new , I never lubed it , is this true ? Not lubed new ? Will lube this 1 .
The cable comes with a blister pack of moly lube, and is not pre-lubed. I used a quality synthetic grease on mine, because I don't know what kind of grease is in those blister packs...don't use too much but use just a good coating. You may want to double check the routing of the cable for any tight bends or strange angles - all the bends should be at a smooth angle so the cable can turn inside the housing easily.
