351W running rich

i have a '77 351W from an econline van that i recently put in my truck. My problem is i can't get it to stop running rich. I just rebuilt the carb (Autolite 2150), it has a new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs and still stings my eyes and smokes when it idles and really plumes when i rev it up. The only mod i have is full-length headers. I also can't get it to idle below 800 rpm. i am out of ideas, so any of yours are more than welcome.
Thanks

check the float level. it may be a little high and letting gas overflow into the engine causing the high idle. swap in smaller jets.

Tonedog - How did you set your idle adjusting screws? These are usually two slotted screws in the front of the carburetor. After a rebuild they tell you to screw them in all the way then back them out 1 1/2 turns. For final adjustment attach a vacuum guage to any vacuum port on the manifold then turn the adjusting screws in, one at a time, until the vacuum starts to drop off, stop, back the screw out until the vacuum comes back up. Then do the other screw. Good luck.

I agree with the float, you're getting excessive fuel overflow and that's why you can get the idle down. Remove the air filter, start it and let it warm up some then shut it off. Look inside the carb and see if fuel is still flowing into and on to the butterflies from the booster venturi, looks like it's boiling on the plates.

While it's running look in the carb and see if the accel.pmp. noozle is leaking, should only flow fuel when jazzing the throttle, then the pmp's check ball isn't sealing.
