Wierd sounding diesels!!!

Once in a while around town Ill here either Dodge or Ford diesels that make a weird like fluttering noise when they drive by. Its not the normal turbo whistle sound that my diesel makes. The best I can explain it is like a FLUTTERING. Is this caused by different turbos or exhausts, or from older trucks or what. Just wondering.

I've notice the same noise on Dodges and some older Fords that I've heard go by. I'd like to know as well...maybe it's thier turbo?

My 05 doesn't sound like that...justs whistles beautifly!

all 7.3s do it, my 6.0 does it at light throttle but not like my 7.3. Sounds more like a higher pitched deuce and a half

But both my trucks are straight piped with 5" exhaust.

Exhaust Brake Or Jake Brake Maybe? A Few Of The 7.3's In Town Here Have Them And A Couple Dodges Also, Definitly Not The Infamous Turbo Fart.

It's compressor surge. Without going into really technical details about compressor maps (which would bore just about every one of you) it generally happens when your turbo is trying to push move more air than your engine will accept. This can happen under very low throttle conditions, or if you have a large turbo for the size/efficiency of the engine.

The fluttering occurs because the compressor wheel is actually stopping while trying to build boost - compressor surge is generally bad for turbochargers, too :-o If severe enough, you can beat bearings and shafts up really badly.

If you can imagine, it's kind of like dead-heading a water or fuel pump, except with air instead of liquid.

Blow-off valves are designed to prevent this, but they're generally not widely used on diesel trucks.

Which part are you disputing? Compressor maps *are* boring. Compressor surge is bad. BOV's aren't widely used on diesel trucks.

What i am talking about is the actual exhaust note that these trucks have. I mean when they drive by its a constant sound, not just once in awhile. Mine has the diesel engine sound with the turbo whistle, these have this wierd fluttering sound. It is possible its the 7.3's I never really looked that closely, just curious.

I'm not sure what you mean?

Most straight 6 engines have an interesting exhaust note compared to other engines. You seem to be able to hear the individual pulses either, and the way they are timed it creates an odd sound. I personally like the sound of it.

My truck does that under part throttle, like if I'm trying to drive thru town without drawing too much attention to myself ( try that straight-piped with 5"stacks )
