as we speek...err read, my truck is sitting in the yard in need of a new tranny. I am going to pull the trigger on a new one next monday and am looking for opinions ....john woods or BTS. I know no one has anything bad to say about BTS I am just wondering if John Woods is as good. I dont think shipping would be that much different(probibly within a few hundered dollars). I am in central Oregon....but even if shipping was $500 I am going with the better tranny.
One of the things I have noticed from the websites is JW offers 3 levels of transmission, BTS offers one. I am assuming BTS just skips all the crap and does it all out?
the truck gets mostly freeway mileage and at least 3 times a summer when it gets good and hot I hook on to my 30' 5th wheel and try to pull it over the cascades at 2 in the afternoon with the AC running on max. It also see's occasion duty with a bobcat or other equipment in tow.
truck is mostly stock with the few mods listed in SIG.
Do you have any other mods planned on your truck? I know if you're looking at a DP tuner, then the BTS has some advantages. Otherwise I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
Terrebonne huh? I live in Lakeview about 3 hours south of you. From what I've heard, Brian at BTS goes all out and spares no expense when he builds a trans- you get the same trans whether you are stock or running a highly modded truck. If I had the money, I think I'd go BTS. Unfortunately I don't have the money and I'm going to have to try to save my rebuilt stocker with 40K on it.
I just bought my truck in Redmond a few months ago, it wasn't there long but you might remember seeing it- gold crew cab short box 4x4 at Thomas Sales & Service.
i have a bts and i love it but you are closer to john woods, most people out west go with hime and most people over here go with bts, either way you're gettin a quality product

I've been out in your area a few time's and have thought about buying property out there if I ever have any extra cash. I think I do rember the truck....small world on such a large internet.
I have been planning on a Dp tuner for the last 2 years but I have 2 kids and a PSD so things usually get in the way. I know this may sound strange but the tranny couldnt have gone out at a better time. I have a $4400 mileage reimbursement comeing from my employer friday as well as w's economic stimilus package so I will actuall be able to fix it fairly fast. Any other time it would be a few months before she was back on the road.
Right now I am driveing my 76 chevy cough cough so at 10 miles to the gallon I am highley motivated to get it on the road, but hey at least I still got wheels so I ain't complaing.
I think I will call both JW and BTS tomorrow and see what they have to say but I just have a gut feeling I am going to end up with a BTS.

Thanks for the input!!!
Why in the world would you want to buy land in Lakeview? I can't wait to get out of this place! I feel ya on the 2 kids and a truck thing- the reason I have the gold bucket of bolts is because I sold my super nice, super reliable 95 extended cab so I could buy a crew cab- mine are 3 years and 7 months old. Aside from the truck, kids, and wife I also have 3 horses, 2 dogs, a cat, 4 rabbits, 2 fish, 2 other cars (wife's and my commuter), 2 snowmobiles and a dirt bike to feed I wish I could spring for the BTS trans right now- I just heard his VB went up to $400

John Wood's trans are all the same. The only difference is if you want to add an intermediate and/or output shaft. John wood makes some custom parts that NOBODY else makes. His trans are top notch! Lot's of high HP 7.3L run his trans.
As far as tuning, he works with DP tuner. Jody from DP tuner will be at John's shop the first week in June to live tune. I will be there!
Aside from the trans, John is a great guy and he takes the time to show you what makes his trans so good.
I will be going with John Wood when I need the rebuild. I already have his VB and love it. Also, he has built 4R100 trannys that are in the fastest powerstrokes in the country. And yes, him and Jody from DP are always working together from what I've heard. Check the website John Wood Automotive - Home
Either way, I don't think you can go wrong. flip a coin if you must.

Reason: whoops
Hey Fyrehose- how'd you know Jody is gonna be out here? I'm in Orange County but to get some live tuning done I'll run out to El Centro. Do you know what dyas exactly- I need to put in for leave!!

No need to call $5774.80 shipped to Seattle. Price includes shipping, core charge, and core shipping back. Had my BTS installed almost 3 weeks ago. Be sure to also check out www.northwestforddiesels.com since you are a local. Love the new trans, towed the boat home and raced it last weekend.
Hey Mongo, if the DP-Tuner "main man himself" is going to be in SoCal I might want to make that run out to El Centro myself for some live tuning. I've got a John Wood VB and the DP is going in this weekend.

He will be there tuning about 10 -12 trucks. May 30-June 1. He will also be there a few more days to work with John on tuning.
I don't know if there are any more openings for tuning. Call JW and find out.
