I have a 2000 F350 and my automatic transmission is having serious issues ! As you know diesel engines are not made for high rpms but my truck has decided to break this trend. the truck redlines at 4K rpms and when accelerating from a stop the truck does not want to shift into second. the truck hits 3700rpms and wont shift without some serious pedaling. i had to limp the truck home. even using the column shift and attempting to manually shift from first to second no result. i turned the programmer to stock check the over drive and four wheel drive etc nothing has changed. I need advice on things to check for. once out of first things are great. Good transitions from 2nd to 3rd and so on but to get into 2nd i had to allow the truck to "rev out" let off the gas and then give it alot of throttle to shift it sounds terrible and i know the transmission and engine cant take this abuse but i didnt know if there were sensors to check and so on. please im open to ANY suggestions ! youre help is always greatly appreciated and the truck is depressing to look at sitting in the garage ! we all know the felling
I know this isn't a fix, but I think if you put the truck in 2nd gear it won't go into 1st. Maybe that would get you around a little bit without redlining the motor a lot. That is, if you have to drive the truck around.
to answer several questions at once i drained all fluid out of the transmission and there was no discoloration, metal shavings etc but yes i do have gauges and all temperatures stayed normal. also something was mentioned about shifting into second but even when using the column shift you cannot shift into second. oh and when draining the fluid the amount of fluid that drained out was normal i.e. it was not low. im curious as this might be an electrical issue as in a sensor of some sort it happened too randomly and without notice to convience me of mechanical failure. does any electrical systems come to mind?
Man that's weird, because IIRC, the tranny will default into 3rd gear if all out failure happens. Even though I'm on my second tranny, I never had that issue. Hell I didn't know a stock 7.3 could spin 4000rpms!!
I had also thought of electrical failior, with gear selector in 2nd the truck should take off in second, the VSS sensor on tansmission also controls shift
need to check for codes

This is what shrinks refer to as "Denial". I think the next step in the mental process of something like this is "Oh Well".
to answer furher questions even when putting the gear selector to second the truck will not start off in second no matter what i do there is no way to avoid first gear my project for tomorrow is pull any codes and check any cables and electric wiring harnesses that could be disconnected or loose. i am almost out of ideas and it costs an arm and a leg to have these transmissions repaired, but looking on the bright side tax refund checks are in and im going to "stimulate" the economy one automotive problem at a time !
Call BTS. He might be able to point you in the right direction even if he isn't going to be able to sell you a trans. 1-870-422-3673. He won't sell you what you don't need so if he tells you to do something, it might be a free idea. He does know these transmissions left, right, up, down, center and sideways.
Is there a 2nd gear brake band on these trannies?
Sounds like 2nd gear is slipping and giving the illusion of not hitting second, but instead just slips until it is time for 3rd.
