If your points distributor is in good shape, I mean tight shaft bushings, you probably won't see much difference at first. As the points wear, you will need to readjust the gap or you will lose mileage and performance gradually. If you go to a Duraspark with a aftermarket ignition box like MSD, Jacobs or Crane, you will probably notice smoother, quicker starts. You may also be able to
lean out your carb slightly due to better combustion efficiency.
I did this swap and got about 1 to 2 mpg better, and have a much smoother idle and quicker starts, of course my points distributor had been rotating since 1970 so was a little sloppy. I personaly am glad I made the switch.

Your points melted hu? You are probably lacking a resistor to reduce the voltage to the coil. Generally speaking, points systems are designed to work on 6 volts so you need to cut the voltage down or it will burn up your points. Systems with an aftermarket box like the MSD can use the full 12 volts because the points aren't carrying much amperage, they are only used to trigger the box.
