I bought fuel filters from Autozone and replaced the old ones today, the one on the top of the engine was different from the old one, for one it was a smaller diameter than the original and it doesn't snap into the lid. I verified it is the part number they show for my truck (FF779) did not see a brand name on the box. I am concerned with the difference in size, is it an acceptable replacement or is it going to cause me problems.
I wouldn't use them. If you get debris into those injectors you'll ruin them and they are very expensive. Did the large fuel filter on the frame have a white membrane around the filter pleats? If not then it's the wrong filter, missing the 'Aqua-Bloc' membrane that keeps water out of the injectors.
Sweet cause the cheaper, but I am stuck driving it til they get here, you think it will cause any problems for short duration? Am towing my fifth wheel this weekend.
If you have any doubt, and it sounds like you do, it's not worth the risk. The most important thing to the life of your injectors is proper filtration and good fuel pressure. If it were me, I wouldn't run the risk of injector damage.
Pick up a set at the Ford dealer. The price is far less than risking the injectors, IMO. An International Truck parts supply would also have them. I don't recall that specific part number so hopefully someone will post up on that.
As Kepler4 mentioned, a International dealer (if you have one near you) is a great place to get your fuel filters. You would want part number 1847170C93
Here is another link for Racor fuel filters online. This place is a couple of bucks cheaper than most...
I found the right ones and put them in already, also talk to the guys at autozone and showed them that they had the wrong ones in the package. their website showed the kind I was supposed to get and that what I got was completely wrong. Thanks for all the help!
I picked up a set of fuel filters from Autozone last week and have not yet put them in. I looked on the filters and they say LUBER-FINER L4604F. They look just like the Racor ones except for the plastic which is black and not tan. Are these filters correct?
Here is a list of Fuel filter brands and part #'s, which brands do we need to stay away from?

Some of the part numbers listed are a little off, but if you are going by brand....
Naturally, Ford/Motorcraft, Racor and International are all OK. The last time I checked, Baldwin and Hastings were repackaged Racor. Purolator may also be OK since Baldwin, Hastings and Purolator are all divisions of Clarcor Inc. Other than that, I am not so sure if any of the others listed are OK...

Thanks for the reply, I copied and pasted the list of part #'s from dieselfiltersonline. The Autozone (Luber-Finer) filters don't have the Aquablock sleave on them so I will take them back today. I printed out the picture from Autozone's web site which clearly shows an Aquablock sleave on the filter. I will be showing them that when I take the filters back.
