Well today I went ahead and upgaded my current rear speakers to 6x9 Sony Xplod 290w speakers. I opened up the rear speaker slot thing and when I tried to fit the speaker it did not fit? I was told 6x9" speakers will fit in the rear. Is it just me or is there a way to jig it into position
Emilie is you're truck a regular cab or an extended cab? My 96 F150 extended cab had 6x8s in the rear. I believe the regular cabs, at least some of them, left the factory with smaller 5x7s in the rear.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe trucks originally equipped with Ford premium sound systems used the bigger 6x8s, while trucks with the standard system had the smaller 5x7s.
I was able to retrofit a set if 6x9s in the back of mine. I used the original 2 top speaker mounting holes and I had to drill 2 new holes for the bottom. I wire tied a thick piece of foam to the back side of each rear speaker over the big magnet, otherwise the speakers would clank around against the inside metal of the truck.
If you're unable to fit the speakers inside the factory holes you could always get a set of 6x9 speaker boxes and mount them elsewhere.
Hey Louie3,
Check out the Interior & Exterior FAQ at the top of the SD forum to see if it has instructions on how to remove the door panel. There may be a link with pics that could show you how to remove the front door panel. I usually go there before asking just to check it out. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
