It should already have a stock cold air intake. It takes air from outside the engine compartment. Unless you are changing it for looks or the gee whiz factor, it won't do much. jd
I don't know of anyone who makes an intake for the old 2.9, I guess you can find anything on ebay. Rangers have every good factory air boxes, not restrictive at all. I'm big into doing engine mods, I had the AEM brute force on my 04 4.0. Other than a whitsle, it really didn't do much untill I added the bama engine programer. The engine was retuned for increased air flow and made use of it. Intakes by them selves only add hp when you have a restrictive stock set up, the ranger does not. However to see any real gains on a ranger, you need a tune to go with the intake. There are no programers for that engine, there maybe a chip still made by someone. Without a tune it's only good for looks and sound. When a test was done on a 94 4.0 with an K&N intake and no tune, the result was 2 hp increase at the wheels. The reason the intake manuafactures get the big numbers when testing thier intakes on vehicles, because they dyno tune the vehicle with thier intake for the best result. They basically do what a programer does, they add timming, fuel or whatever is needed to get the best result from thier product on a particular vehicle. Thats why your results are seldom the same as thiers, as most people don't have the ability to dyno tune thier own vehicles. Thats why we buy the bama engine programer, it retunes the engine to make the best use of your engine mods. I supose this is more than you needed to know ha ha. The bottom line is that an intake won't do much for your 2.9 but look cool and give you that varoom sound when you nail it.
