I am having a problem with my gas gauge. It was not working at all so I grounded it better and it went up. When I shut the truck off it goes down but it never comes down when the power is engaged. All the other gauges work fine. I plan to take it out but don,t really know why it is acting up??????????????????
The gauge is at the grounded end of the circuit. There is a rheostatic contact inside the gauge that allows a certain amount of voltage to flow to ground.
If you have grounded the sending unit, it's going to read full all the time. Chances are if it never read at all, either the float is full of gas or the sending unit is bad.
I'm assuming you still run a 6 volt electrical system.
I'm more familiar with the aftermarket gauges than the originals so I can't help much. The fact that the gauge needle moves is an indicator that the gauge is probably okay. The problem is likely in the sending unit or the wiring. The 48-52 trucks have rubber insulators under the gas tank that can sometimes interfere with getting a proper ground. You might try temporarily running a ground wire all the way back to the negative side of the battery to be sure you have a proper ground and then see how the gauge reads. I had to run a special ground wire to my sender from a source other than the tank itself...
