Newbie question

ok so im new to the truck scene so please take it easy on me lol probably not one of the brightest questions ever asked but here goes. just got a project truck 88 f-250 already with a 4 in lift and 36's. I knew it needed some work when I got it no big deal i know what end of the wrench to hold
Heres the question the rear seal where the driveshaft runs into the transfer case is leaking I know how to pull the drive shaft replaceing the seal seems kinda basic but what kind of oil should I use when I put things back together it a 5 speed manual is there a special transfer case oil I should use or just any heavy weight oil
Also I figure while I'm at it I should probably pull the diff covers off and check the gears and such what kind of grease/ oil should I use there as well like I said dumb Question but something I need to know before I hit the mud in 2 weeks to beat it up before i finish the projectThanks for taking it easy on me

The transfer case is probably a BW1356 (or something like that), and it takes Automatic transmission fluid (believe Dexron III Mercron), probably about 2 quarts.

The axles should take anything close to 80W90 gear oil... IF you have a limited slip then you'll need friction modifier or a gear oil with the modifier in it.

couldnt have said it better myself!

sounds like you got a good place to start! this way you will see first hand whats inside and how it all works.

also while you have your rear shaft off check the u-joints and make sure they arent dry or loose! biggest problem offroaders face!

you outta weld up your front diff while you have it apart, that way it will perform better when you go play!

Good point with checking the u joints. Greese is your friend.

While I'm all for more traction, are you trying to get him to break that TTB?

Thanks for the help. i found the leaking seal while greasing everything up and thanks for the U joint advice I'll probably just change them out now while everything is apart since I'm not sure exactly how much abuse this truck has actually been put thru over the last several years I'm sure alot considering it's set up for mud running Dont really want to blow one the first time thru the pits

D50TTB and 36s....no not the first time but probably half way through the second.

Good informative well asked question there newb. I only comment because usually we get "I got a truck and its leaking. What do I do?" type questions.

Does it have a ttb50? He said that it was already set up for mud racing, and it has a 4" lift. It is possible that the PO switched the ttb out somewhere along the lines.

What does the front axle look like? is it the ttb or is it a solid axle?

Oh, and nice, well thought out question!! No reason to be rough on someone that asks detaied questions like that!!! Rep to ya!

There was a D60 sitting in the bed of the truck ( but I was hopeing to find some rockwells before I put the D60 in) along with other misc parts when I brought it home. I figured I would let the old break before replacing this way I have time to go over it since our first mud night starts on the 16th. The guy had to get rid of it because his wife said he was spending to much time and money on the truck, personally I think I would have got rid of the wife before I let the truck go since it isnt in that bad of shape

A d60 front, or rear? If it's one of those crappy d60 fronts, it's not worth anything but scrap, so I'll come get it from you

It's a front but with scrap prices being so high right now I think I just might hang onto it for a little longer thanks for the offer though
