There's a lot of weird info going on here!!!!!
First off the HO's DID have the Windsor(351) firing order.
But I don't think there was an HO til '82.
in '85 and up the HO would have had roller lifters.
The highest non Cobra HO 302 would have had 225 horse and a lot higher than 220 pounds of torque. a Cobra motor would have had roller rockers and GT-40 heads and would have been only a '93 block!
.

Also be careful on your balances. the '80 and below 302's use the 351 28 oz. imbalance. The '81 and up use a 50oz.

Does the front cover have the fuel pump pad? Is it open to the cam or blocked off about an inch deep?

Pedestal mount rockers debuted in '77-'78(?)

Here's a scary thought!!!! In '80 Ford made a ******* small bore motor that was a 4.2L (255 CID) Measure the bore since it sounds like you got the heads off. If it's smaller than 4.00" it's junk!!

How do we know the firing order on this particular motor???

All my info pertains to about '79 and up.

Question on a 302

LAST EDITED ON 24-Jan-01 AT 12:49 PM (EST)[p]I know alot of misinformation comes from books and magazines.
I just told a guy in another forum that 85-up is when the weight
changed, but now I remember after you posted (Ivstang) that it
was somewhere 80-81. I've got a book "High Perfomance Ford Engine Parts Interchange" and it says the weight changed in 85.
I wouldn't consider myself having anything "special" as far as a 302 unless it was a 85-up roller motor with the forged flat-tops. I have a 86 roller motor out of a lincoln and besides the roller cam, there's not much to say.
Didn't later on, Ford siamesed the bores? This would be something good to start with too.

Question on a 302

There's a couple of 302 race blocks that have siamese cylinders but they are pricey. Some people like the Mexican blocks because of thicker caps and webs. I've also read that the iron was better/worse, depending on who you talk to.

I have the same book as you and it's wrong about the '85 and up imbalance. I think I've mentioned it before, but if you look up balancers in any catalog it'll state the 302/351 balancer as the same part # up till '80. Of course around '70 you had a 3 bolt crank pulley! fuggin Fords LOL!!!
