1988 F-250 HD, Super-cab, 4X4, Axle code 35, full floating
Been fighting this for 3 years now. Seals are a 2 piece type so the out rubber seal with spring - seals to the inner rubber seal
Whats been done so far-
1. Kept track of who made the oil seal and used a different brand. all last about 4 months then start leaking. Driver sides starts leaking first the the other side starts a week or two later.
2. Soaked oil seals in gear oil before installing
3. Clean and checked seal fit to hub & axle
4. After replacing seals, filled axle I lowered one side at a time to insure gear oil flowed to each hub, Drove it for a week and rechecked level.
5. Used " Lucas Hub Oil"
6. Have used different mechanics and broke the tools out and worked on it my-self to make sure axle nuts were torqued to correct specs.
7.
Open for any & all suggestions
Have looked back at old post but did not see this issue. If I missed it please give directions to old thread.
Thanks Rusty
Have you made sure the breather on the axle housing is clear ?
If not, it'll cause the seals to leak pretty quick... As the unit warms up, the air in it expands and pushes the fluid out the seals if the breather is clogged.
You may have some missing or mis-matched parts. I can't remember the exact timing of this maybe 1994?, but Ford re-designed the seal and bearing in the early 10.25 axle. The replacement seal kit (now F4TZ-1S177-C) contains the new seal, an oil slinger, and a slightly thinner inner bearing to accomodate the slinger. All these parts must be used together. I've seen aftermarket seals last as little as a week but the Ford replacements usually go away for good. Hope this helps.
Krewat - I'll Double check the vent tube again
RudyF6- I'll track down this kit and get two of them.
Thank You for the input.
Y'all have a good day!
