Yet "another" Valve Adjustment Question ...

Does anyone know exactly which 8 Valves can be properly adjusted with #1 Cyl. @ TDC and which 8 Valves can be properly adjusted with #6 Cyl. at TDC on an FE with Adjustable Rockers ... ?

I have always adjusted Chevy V8's in this manner and it worked perfectly with hydraulic or solid lifter cams ... Seems to me there must be a procedure for FE's similar to that of Chevy's, except for the firing order ...

Ya, a buddy had a cheat sheet made up for this. I guess I like to do things the hard way as I'll run it around to each individual and check it.

Maybe if I was paid by the hour/or job I'd be in more of a hurry and do the shortcut version.

I'll have to dig out my old Motor's Manuals and see if that info is included in the text ...

It was right there in the Manual ...

I found the Valve Adjustment Procedure in a 1971 Motor's Manual ... This is for all FE engines with Adjustable Rockers ...

With Cyl. #1 @ TDC (compression stroke) adjust the following -

No. 1 Intake & Exhaust
No. 4 Exhaust
No. 5 Exhaust
No. 7 Intake
No. 8 Intake


Rotate Crankshaft 180 degrees (1/2 turn) and adjust -

No. 2 Exhaust
No. 4 Intake
No. 5 Intake
No. 6 Exhaust


Rotate Crankshaft 270 degrees (3/4 turn) and adjust -

No. 2 Intake
No. 3 Intake & Exhaust
No. 6 Intake
No. 7 Exhaust
No. 8 Exhaust



A "Degree Wheel" is recommended, but Chalk Marks on the Balancer will suffice.

This method is for COLD setting of Mechanical or Hydraulic Lifters ...
