myanmar cyclone

over the weekend estimates of death were at 351......a day later it was 10000. i come in this moring and 22000 confirmed deaths and over 41000 missing.

all in all it could be close to 75-100k dead.

one particular town of 10000 were all killed when a tidal wave came in and swept everything out

makes me appreciative that we live in this country, were we have access to warnings and aid. and have a chance to get out of harms way.

Yes, we do have warnings and aids, unless you live in earth quake country.

That tragedy in "Burma" reminds me of the Indonesian tragedy in 2004, or the
one at home, in New Orleans.

I'm in the IDGAS mode, or I'd research it...but I see the US is being critical of the (crappy, nasty, commie or worse) government in Myanmar for NOT giving a warning.

Seems you can get on the internet and find out where storms are forming, where they are going, etc. And, get this, there is actual COOPERATION between nations when it comes to spotting & monitoring storms.

So if you (you being the govt of Myanmar) a ratsrear about your people, you could have given them some warning, or a better warning, or maybe even an umbrella and a canoe....

New Orleans was a fart in a windstorm, and a perfect example of how good we have it here. Yea, it was bad and people died, but it could have been alot worse.

i already see it now, some food and medical help will come from us directly via our armed forces (good), then some international agencies will take over with all of 10% of actual funds getting to the people, the rest going to "overhead" and the pockets of the government (myanmar).

No. Bad.

There's people in our country that need food and medical help as it is. I'm so tired of this fricken country going head-over-heels to send money, food, and medical supplies to other countries when WE are the ones who need it. Not to mention that our Armed Forces are here to protect the USA from foreign attacks (Illegal immigrants included...but that's for another thread)...our Armed Forces are NOT a delivery service...
Where was our help when Katrina hit? Where was our help during 9/11? Where was our help with Mt. St. Helens? Where was our help when....

BF, this in no way was directed towards you. I just had to vent, and your post finally popped my pimple!

no one is in need here, not on the scale that those people are. even our poorest live way better than most of them do. most of our poor are victims of themselves, not the government.

plus domestic disasters are suppose to be taken care of by local and state agencies, thats how it should be. fema as far as i know was never intended to be a first on scene resonse service. when they fail then yes, the feds should step in and that does give the appearance of a delayed response by the feds where in reality, they responded as soon as they could, that is when it was figured out the local and state gov failed.

plus those victims are getting plenty of help, way too much money in my opinion has been poured into katrina and 9/11 victims.

but on the flip side of that, i do agree with you in general. i find it pretty hard to beleive that the feds would not have known that local govs were not in the position to handle things on that scale. i also find it pretty amazing we can respond to a disaster faster half a world away than we can in our own backyard. i also love the proaganda around our armed forces helping, showing some officer humping a rice bag or something, reality is the enlisted get strapped with even more extra duty by being voluntold to do so, whether they want to or not. when they are done with their humanitarian mission, they will have a lack of free time in order to catch up on things like training and pm's. been there, done that.

Their rice crop wiped out, dead bodies floating around, and an uncaring Junta government, this is just the beginning of the tragedy for Myanmar. Next comes disease, and then starvation, and the Junta will divert any money or food sent over there. Really sad.

remember my threads monks gone wild part 1 and 2.........well this pretty much reiterates there feelings towards the junta, and i can see why they went wild to begin with

ill quote myself----sad to say

YANGON, Myanmar - Bodies floated in flood waters and survivors tried to reach dry ground on boats using blankets as sails, while the top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar said Wednesday that up to 100,000 people may have died in the devastating cyclone.

Official: Storm toll could be 100,000 - Asia-Pacific - MSNBC.com

Who goes out of our way to help us (during Katrina for example)?

From a Wash Post article, April 27th, 2007:

Allies offered $854 million in cash and in oil that was to be sold for cash. But only $40 million has been used so far for disaster victims or reconstruction, according to U.S. officials and contractors. Most of the aid went uncollected, including $400 million worth of oil. Some offers were withdrawn or redirected to private groups such as the Red Cross. The rest has been delayed by red tape and bureaucratic limits on how it can be spent.

I wish I had the oil right now.....

I think the Mexican Army actually showed up with some stuff at one point, or at least offered. Still in the IDGAS mode so feel free to research as I didn't today, just going from my failing memory.

We are the richest country in the world. Our poor people are fat. We should give to anyone evertime they need it, especially oppressed people like Myanmar. Hey, how about the US Navy helping that North Korean ship attacked by pirates here a couple months ago--probably saved some poor bastids life. Wonder if he'll tell the tale when he gets home on his feet instead of in a box.
