do I need a bigger rad?
I have an 87 150 302 4spd mechanical fan. I installed a 193 ford t stat & it cools fine all winter & usually ok in the summer. On the highway it runs fine then when I get in traffic it spikes up to 210 to 220. I wonder if the rad is bad. Maybe I should get a bigger rad from a salvage yard? If so what should I look for, a 460 or diesel rad? While at the salvage yard should I look for an electric fan? If I tow with the current set up forget it it runs hot 220+ I dont see any antifreeze in the oil, & dont appear to be burning any. Any thoughts on the subject will be appreciated. Thanks Todd. I also typed this in the cooling forum also incase you see it there too.

You can try a new fan clutch for the traffic/slow speed driving, increase your airflow, or go with an electric setup..and given the age, get your radiator rodded out, or replace it with new, and that will do it for you.

do you have a fan shroud? this is big and makes a world of difference. getting a new clutch fan is also good measure.
when was the truck tuned up last. whats the timing set at with the spout connector out. have you pulled codes? I would also install a mechanical gauge and not trust the stock ford gauges. they suck.

mech gauge already in, have a shroud. just tuned up. Did it before tune up & after. I cant check the timing but it doesnt appear to be out of time. runs real good. If anything its maybe on the fat side which wont make it run hot. It usually runs hot if towing, or running on the highway for awhile then getting into traffic. It has a new water pump too. I think the fan clutch is bad. Should I go with an e fan set up & new rad, or new fan clutch & rad?
